Small businesses are increasingly adopting generative AI (GenAI), which now integrates into various software packages to handle tasks, manage busy work, and support employee productivity. Despite its growing presence, a recent study titled “Data Privacy and Generative AI Usage,” conducted by Zoho and CRM Essentials, reveals that employees remain apprehensive about GenAI. The study surveyed 1,000 U.S. employees from different industries and company sizes, uncovering significant concerns regarding data privacy and job security. Specifically, 46% of employees view AI as a potential job threat, while 74% believe government regulation is necessary for training AI with employee data.
Interestingly, small businesses with fewer than 100 employees show notable benefits from GenAI. While 45% of these businesses do not utilize GenAI, those that do report a significant productivity boost, with 43% acknowledging substantial improvements. Despite concerns, 15% of employees find AI indispensable for their tasks.
To overcome hesitancy, small business owners should focus on integrating GenAI within centralized CRMs to enhance data management and collaboration. Many modern CRMs, like Zoho’s Zia, offer integrated GenAI features that assist with data analysis, meeting transcriptions, and more. Encouraging employees to explore GenAI’s capabilities and emphasizing data privacy can foster a more positive reception and effective use of the technology.
