7th ASEAN-Italy Economic Dialogue Commemorates Milestone, Emphasizes Sustainability, and Reinforces Economic Collaboration

On October 4, 2023, H.E. Mr. Sihasak Phuangketkeow, Vice Minister for Foreign Affairs, presided over the commencement of the 7th High-Level ASEAN-Italy Economic Dialogue, joined by H.E. Mr. Valentino Valentini, Deputy Minister of Enterprises and Made in Italy. This event held special significance as it marked the 155th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Thailand and Italy in 2023. It was a collaborative effort between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Thailand, The European House-Ambrosetti (an Italian think tank), and the Italian Embassy in Bangkok.

More than 300 participants, including policymakers, business leaders, and academics from Thailand, Italy, and other ASEAN countries, gathered to exchange insights on navigating new opportunities and addressing common challenges in today's global landscape. With a focus on sustainability and the green transition, the dialogue delved into key topics such as strengthening the ASEAN-Italy supply chain for strategic sectors, combating climate change, and promoting resilience and inclusive growth through digitalization and innovation.

In his opening remarks, the Vice Minister for Foreign Affairs reiterated the Thai Government's commitment to proactive economic diplomacy, urging Italian businesses to bolster their trade and investment relationships with Thailand. He also encouraged ASEAN and Italy to forge new partnerships to ensure that business communities, including SMEs, can fully harness the benefits of the green transition and a thriving digital economy.

Dr. Chadchart Sittipunt, Governor of Bangkok, shared his vision for the tourism industry, drawing parallels between Milan and Bangkok. He stressed the importance of mutual learning between Thailand and Italy to elevate the tourism sector and emphasized the critical role of enhancing the quality of life as an integral aspect of the tourism industry. During his address, the Governor outlined various collaborative policies, focusing on areas such as the environment, health, mobility, safety, management, infrastructure, economy, creativity, and education, all aimed at enhancing the tourism industry.

In addition to the High-Level Dialogue, two side events took place on October 3, 2023. These events featured business matching sessions, facilitating engagement between 50 Thai and ASEAN companies with their Italian counterparts in the renewable energy, pharmaceutical, and sustainable agriculture sectors. A roundtable discussion also explored the role of the financial sector and private capital in promoting ASEAN-Italy investments, further strengthening economic ties between the two regions.
