A sophisticated scam targeting Italian business leaders has surfaced, with fraudsters impersonating Italian Defense Minister Guido Crosetto using AI-generated voice technology and cloned phone numbers. The scammers approached high-profile individuals, including former Inter Milan president Massimo Moratti, the Aleotti family of Menarini Pharmaceuticals, and the Beretta firearms family, requesting ransom payments for allegedly kidnapped journalists. While most recognized the deception, Moratti reportedly transferred one million euros. The Milan Public Prosecutor’s Office is actively investigating, and the Bank of Italy has issued warnings against fraudulent claims involving its name.
This case underscores the growing threat of AI-driven fraud, where advanced technologies are used to deceive even experienced individuals. It highlights the need for increased vigilance, cybersecurity awareness, and stronger fraud prevention measures.
Meanwhile, Italian Defense Minister Crosetto is preparing for a diplomatic visit to India to enhance strategic partnerships. This follows high-level meetings between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, reinforcing economic and defense cooperation between the two nations.
In a parallel development, AI regulation will be a key focus at the Artificial Intelligence Action Summit in Paris, co-chaired by Prime Minister Modi and French President Emmanuel Macron on February 10-11, 2025. The summit will bring together global leaders and technology executives to discuss responsible AI development, ethical concerns, and regulatory frameworks. The event is particularly timely given recent cybercrime incidents involving AI-generated deepfakes and scams.
These developments highlight the critical need for international collaboration in regulating artificial intelligence and preventing misuse. As AI continues to advance, governments and industries must implement strict regulations to protect individuals and businesses from sophisticated fraud.
