Adnoc Distribution, the largest fuel and convenience retailer in the UAE, plans to fast-track the deployment of electric vehicle (EV) charging points across its locations in the coming year, aiming to have 50 operational by the end of 2023, as stated by its chief executive.
Bader Al Lamki, in an interview with The National, highlighted the company's focus on installing these charging points primarily along highways, catering to the high demand in these areas. He emphasized the significance of enabling recharging opportunities for commuters traveling between major cities like Al Ain, Abu Dhabi, Dubai, and the Al Dhafra region.
“We're taking serious steps towards enabling the roll-out of EV chargers to attend to the needs of increasing demand for EV cars. Towards the end of this year, we are likely to have 50 charging points across the network,” said Mr. Al Lamki, highlighting the company's readiness to support and facilitate EV mobility in the coming years.
Adnoc Distribution, currently operating 38 EV charging points, formed a joint venture in January with Taqa, known as E2GO, to establish and manage electric vehicle infrastructure in Abu Dhabi. The ambitious goal is to become the primary provider of EV charging points and associated infrastructure across the capital, aiming to meet the projected need for around 70,000 charging points by 2030, requiring an investment of up to $200 million.
Furthermore, Adnoc Distribution is making strides in the direction of supplying biofuel to its business-to-business customers. The company has committed to using biofuel to power its heavy vehicle fleet, reducing its carbon footprint. Mr. Al Lamki mentioned that the company is awaiting further guidance from the energy ministry regarding the potential sale of low-carbon fuel to general consumers.
This strategic shift towards biofuels aligns with global efforts to introduce cleaner, renewable fuel sources. As a cleaner alternative to traditional petroleum-based fuels, biofuels offer significant potential to mitigate carbon emissions.
Adnoc Distribution recently announced a 9% increase in third-quarter profit, attributed to a substantial rise in fuel volumes sold. Mr. Al Lamki expressed confidence in the continuation of this positive momentum into the fourth quarter, especially coinciding with the commencement of the UAE’s peak winter season, foreseeing increased outdoor activities and events.
