Burberry, the UK-based fashion brand, has successfully concluded its acquisition of a product development business from its long-term Italian supplier, Pattern. This strategic move is set to bolster Burberry's technical outerwear capabilities and increase its control over product quality, pricing, delivery, and sustainability.
This acquisition builds upon Burberry's history of manufacturing in the UK, where it will continue producing its iconic heritage trench coats and weaving gabardine. The company had previously integrated its leather goods based in Florence, Italy, as part of its expansion efforts.
For nearly two decades, Burberry and Pattern have collaborated at Pattern's product development facility in Turin, Italy, to create luxury ready-to-wear items such as blankets and downs. As part of the acquisition, approximately 70 staff members from Pattern in Turin will join Burberry once the transaction is finalized, expected later this year. The remaining aspects of Pattern's business will continue to be operated independently.
Jonathan Akeroyd, CEO of Burberry, expressed enthusiasm for this strategic investment, highlighting its significance in unlocking the full potential of Burberry's outerwear category. He emphasized that it would enhance their capabilities, further strengthen their foundations in the UK, and grant them greater control over product quality, delivery, and sustainability. Akeroyd welcomed the new colleagues on board, signaling an exciting phase for Burberry.
