The growth of Indigenous tourism stands as a vital facet of reconciliation and a significant avenue for First Nations, Inuit, and Métis communities. These communities boast a wealth of stories, traditions, and landscapes, appealing to travelers seeking genuine experiences, sustainable practices, and eco-tourism. To bolster the industry's small businesses, Canada's Government initiated the $20 million Indigenous Tourism Fund (ITF) as part of Budget 2022.
Minister Soraya Martinez Ferrada, overseeing Tourism and the Economic Development Agency of Canada for the Regions of Quebec, revealed the launch of ITF's Micro and Small Business Stream (MSBS). This $10 million initiative, in partnership with the Indigenous Tourism Association of Canada (ITAC) and provincial/territorial Indigenous tourism bodies, aims to directly aid small enterprises.
The MSBS under ITF targets multiple fronts in Indigenous tourism support. Primarily, it offers financial aid to Indigenous tourism operators. Emphasizing authenticity, the MSBS facilitates ITAC's delivery and promotion of The Original Original Accreditation Program, ensuring high-quality, authentic experiences. Additionally, it harnesses the expertise of provincial/territorial Indigenous tourism bodies to maximize positive impacts on Indigenous communities and the tourism sector.
Through collaborative efforts with ITAC and provincial/territorial bodies (excluding Ontario with program administration details pending), the Indigenous-led approach enables eligible micro/small Indigenous tourism entities to access non-repayable contributions of up to $25,000.
Indigenous tourism not only generates employment and prospects nationwide but aligns with the government's aim to foster culturally appropriate and socially responsible growth. It's a pivotal element in the broader Federal Tourism Growth Strategy, emphasizing the government's dedication to Canadian tourism's vitality. Moreover, it plays a crucial role in community self-determination and the ongoing journey of reconciliation.
