Carrefour has announced a franchise partnership with Dubai-based Apparel Group to expand its operations in India. The partnership will initially focus on North India, with plans for nationwide expansion and the first stores expected to open by 2025. This move is part of Carrefour’s global strategy to extend its franchise into more than 10 new countries by 2026.
India, with its 1.4 billion population and growing consumer spending power, offers a significant market opportunity. The retail giant aims to tap into the country's large food market while offering competitive prices.
Patrick Lasfargues, Carrefour’s executive director of international partnerships, emphasized that entering the Indian market is a key step in their expansion plans. Nilesh Ved, owner of Apparel Group, echoed this sentiment, expressing confidence in making Carrefour a preferred brand for Indian consumers.
India is currently dealing with high food price inflation, impacting its economy. Carrefour’s return to the Indian market marks a renewed effort to capture a share of this growing economy, following a previous withdrawal in 2014 due to market challenges.
