China, Canada Aim for Strategic Partnership, Says Wang

China and Canada should work toward normalizing relations and establishing a strategic partnership, said Foreign Minister Wang Yi to his Canadian counterpart, Melanie Joly. Wang emphasized that China-Canada relations have faced difficulties, but it is in both countries' interests to maintain and develop these ties. Joly’s visit is the first by a Canadian foreign minister in seven years.

Relations soured in 2018 after Huawei's CFO Meng Wanzhou was arrested in Canada, leading to China's detention of two Canadians. Wang stressed that issues like Taiwan and Tibet are China's domestic affairs and urged Canada not to interfere. Both ministers also discussed trade, climate change, and global conflicts.
