Chinese Spy with Prince Andrew Ties Barred from UK

17 Dec, 2024

A suspected Chinese spy with business ties to Prince Andrew has been barred from the U.K. over concerns about national security. The British immigration tribunal upheld the decision on Thursday, revealing that the Chinese national had developed a close relationship with the prince, even being invited to his birthday party. The government feared that the man could exploit his influence over Andrew, who was under significant pressure at the time, for political purposes.

Authorities believe the Chinese national, whose identity remains undisclosed, was connected to the United Front Work Department, a faction of the Chinese Communist Party tasked with influencing foreign entities. The tribunal concluded that the businessman had the potential to create relationships between senior Chinese officials and high-profile U.K. figures, which could be used by the Chinese government for political interference.

Prince Andrew's office stated that he ceased contact with the Chinese national once concerns were raised. The Duke of York emphasized that their meetings were conducted through official channels with no sensitive matters discussed. He declined to comment further on national security issues.

The scandal follows Prince Andrew's reputation being marred by his association with wealthy foreign individuals, raising suspicions about their influence over the royal family. His finances have been strained after stepping back from royal duties and relinquishing public funding, partly due to his controversial ties with Jeffrey Epstein, the American financier.

The U.K. government has grown increasingly concerned about China's influence efforts. MI5, Britain’s domestic intelligence agency, previously warned of attempts to sway British politicians. In 2023, a parliamentary researcher was arrested on suspicion of providing sensitive information to China.

The Chinese national, who moved to the U.K. in 2002, was stopped in November 2021. Authorities found documents linking him to Prince Andrew's adviser, highlighting the closeness of their relationship.
