Google has partnered with the Canadian Journalism Collective to distribute $100 million annually to Canadian news companies, a move that exempts Google from the Online News Act, which requires tech companies to negotiate agreements with news publishers. The Canadian Journalism Collective, a federally incorporated non-profit organization created specifically for this purpose, will oversee the fair distribution of these funds. This collective was established in May by a group of independent publishers and broadcasters to ensure a broad range of news organizations benefit from the funding.
The steering committee of the Canadian Journalism Collective is composed of 12 independent media outlets. These outlets represent a diverse cross-section of the Canadian media landscape, including French language publications, community newspapers, and Indigenous news organizations. Additionally, the committee includes publications that specifically serve Black and minority Canadians. This diverse representation ensures that the funding will support a wide array of voices and perspectives within Canadian journalism.
Through this partnership, Google aims to support the sustainability of Canadian news organizations while complying with regulatory requirements. This initiative underscores the importance of maintaining a diverse and independent media landscape in Canada, ensuring that journalism reflects the country’s rich cultural and linguistic diversity.
