Greece’s Independent Power Transmission Operator (ADMIE) and Italy’s Transmission System Operator (Terna) are collaborating to advance regional energy security and market integration by proposing the new Greece-Italy electricity interconnection (GR.ITA II) for inclusion in the European Union’s second List of Projects of Mutual and Common Interest (PCI/PMI). The official submission will take place during the candidate PCI/PMI project presentations in Brussels on Thursday.
The GR.ITA II project involves the development of a high-capacity submarine power link connecting Thesprotia in Greece with Galatina in Italy. This ambitious interconnection will significantly enhance cross-border electricity exchange capacity, increasing it from the current 500 megawatts (MW) to 1,500 MW—effectively tripling the existing capacity. By facilitating greater energy flow between Greece and Italy, the project will play a crucial role in strengthening Europe’s energy market, promoting renewable energy integration, and ensuring supply stability.
As a strategic energy infrastructure initiative, the Greece-Italy interconnection aligns with the EU’s energy transition goals, supporting decarbonization efforts and reducing reliance on fossil fuels. Enhanced transmission capacity will enable both nations to maximize the use of renewable energy resources, optimize grid efficiency, and stabilize electricity prices.
The project’s inclusion in the PCI/PMI list would grant it priority status, unlocking potential EU funding, fast-tracked regulatory approvals, and streamlined implementation processes. This critical investment in transnational energy infrastructure is expected to foster economic growth, attract new investments, and enhance energy resilience in Southern Europe.
With the increasing importance of cross-border energy cooperation, the GR.ITA II interconnection represents a forward-thinking step in building a more integrated and sustainable European energy network, benefiting consumers and businesses alike.
