The Cabinet's approval of Rs 10,372 crore for the India AI Mission marks a significant step towards fostering AI development within the country. This investment will facilitate the establishment of a high-end scalable AI ecosystem through public-private partnerships. Under the mission, an India AI Innovation Centre will be established to drive research and talent retention. Startups, academia, researchers, and industry players will gain access to AI supercomputing infrastructure, comprising over 10,000 GPUs, aimed at accelerating AI innovation. Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar highlights AI's potential as a catalyst for India's digital economy, positioning the nation as a key player in shaping AI's future globally. The mission's benefits extend to states like Kerala, previously lacking robust tech ecosystems. Additionally, funding provisions will support AI startups and industry-led projects, fostering social impact and innovation. A National Data Management Office will enhance data quality and availability for AI development. Recommendations include setting up a three-tier compute infrastructure and investing in AI computing infrastructure at multiple locations. Notably, global investments by companies like Microsoft and IBM underscore the growing importance of AI innovation worldwide.
