Kemi Badenoch, the UK Minister for Business and Trade, emphasized that the FTA negotiations include addressing issues related to a bilateral investment treaty and business mobility, aiming to ensure a mutually beneficial outcome for both nations.
Although overall visa liberalization falls outside the scope of trade agreements, Badenoch clarified that the focus remains on business mobility within the trade framework. She highlighted the significance of business mobility for trade relations, underscoring its inclusion in the ongoing negotiations.
India's services exports have been growing, while goods exports have faced a slowdown due to Western market demand. Badenoch expressed optimism about the progress in the FTA negotiations, noting that both sides are actively collaborating to resolve differences on issues such as investment treaty, rules of origin, and intellectual property rights.
Despite not disclosing specific negotiation details, Badenoch emphasized the commitment to achieving a successful deal. She acknowledged that the final stages of negotiations can be challenging, but highlighted the closure of several chapters in the pact.
Badenoch addressed the topic of Indian workers' visas, stating that while visas and visa liberalization fall under immigration matters managed by the UK's home office, business mobility remains a relevant consideration within the trade context.
As discussions move forward, the two nations are striving to accommodate various concerns and reach a mutually beneficial arrangement. Badenoch's participation in a G20 trade and investment ministers meeting in Jaipur underlines the dedication to advancing international trade relations between India and the UK.
