UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy announced the UK-India Technology Security Initiative during his visit to India, aiming to strengthen bilateral cooperation in semiconductor technology. This initiative focuses on key areas such as supply chain resilience, skills development, and hardware security, emphasizing both nations' commitment to their Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. Lammy met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Minister for External Affairs S. Jaishankar to discuss defense, security, trade, and investment collaborations.
The Technology Security Initiative aims to leverage India's manufacturing capabilities alongside the UK's expertise in chip design and intellectual property. Key components include joint R&D in chip design, compound semiconductors, and advanced packaging, targeting sectors like telecommunications, cybersecurity, and sustainable technologies. Workforce development will feature exchange programs to equip the semiconductor workforce with advanced technical skills. The initiative also plans to facilitate trade missions between UK and Indian semiconductor companies, thereby strengthening economic ties.
Additionally, the initiative promotes deeper integration in semiconductor manufacturing, fostering joint ventures and business partnerships between Indian and UK companies. Collaborative efforts will focus on enhancing the resilience of semiconductor supply chains, addressing challenges related to raw materials, components, and device security. This initiative aligns with broader efforts to advance cooperation in emerging technologies such as quantum computing and biotechnology, aiming to foster innovation and address global challenges.
