India’s efforts to strengthen its defence capabilities have recently focused on two significant procurement initiatives: the consideration of Embraer’s C-390 Millennium to meet India’s Medium Transport Aircraft (MTA) needs and the revitalisation of the Multi-Role Fighter Aircraft (MRFA) program. The MRFA program has reignited global interest, drawing bidders ranging from Boeing to Saab. These defence acquisitions underscore India's commitment to building a strong and modern military force while carefully weighing the geopolitical ramifications of its choices.
In a move aligning with India’s Atmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India) initiative, Embraer and Mahindra Defence Systems reached an agreement to locally produce the C-390 Millennium transport aircraft earlier this year. This deal represents a pivotal step in reducing India’s dependence on foreign defence suppliers while strengthening domestic production capabilities. The C-390, known for its versatile capabilities in cargo transport and medevac missions, offers a potential solution to replace India’s aging Soviet-era aircraft fleet.
Partnering with Mahindra Defence allows India to benefit from advanced foreign technology while preserving a degree of production sovereignty. This collaboration creates new opportunities for Embraer within one of the fastest-growing defence markets globally and offers a model for future partnerships that align with India’s Make in India policy. If the initiative proves successful, it could pave the way for more such collaborations that boost India’s ability to produce and sustain critical defence assets domestically, furthering the nation’s strategic and security objectives.
