During her first official visit to China, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni signed a significant three-year plan to enhance strategic partnerships between Italy and China across various sectors. This visit marks the first time since 2019 that an Italian prime minister has traveled to China, highlighting a renewed focus on strengthening economic ties.
The agreement aims to bolster Italy’s automotive sector, a key industry for the country. As part of the deal, the Italian government is focusing on increasing investment in electric vehicles and renewable energy, with the goal of improving Italy’s manufacturing capabilities and competitiveness in these sectors. Roberto Vavassori, President of the Italian Association of the Automotive Industry (ANFIA), described the visit as a positive step, noting that it received significant endorsement from both leaders. He emphasized the need for Italian companies to prepare for increased investment and expertise from Chinese firms.
With Italy withdrawing from the Belt and Road Initiative, this new partnership seeks to address gaps in Italy’s automotive industry and boost production capabilities. Italy is positioned as a strategic partner for China, aiming to enhance bilateral trade and investment. Despite existing tariffs and the evolving EU-China relations, Italy remains committed to fostering a stronger economic connection with China.
