Libya-Italy Business Forum planned in Benghazi as Ita Airways resumes flights

13 Mar, 2025

The upcoming Italian-Libyan Business Forum in Benghazi, coinciding with Ita Airways’ resumption of direct flights between Rome and Benghazi-Benina International Airport, aims to strengthen economic collaboration between Italy and Libya. According to Libyan sources, the event will follow the successful economic forum held in Tripoli last October, which was organized by the Italian-Libyan Chamber of Commerce in cooperation with the Italian Embassy and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Libya's Fund for Development and Reconstruction Director General, Belgassem Haftar, emphasized the growing bilateral cooperation, stating that the Italian-Libyan Forum for Development and Reconstruction will officially launch in 2025 with the participation of numerous Italian companies. Haftar hosted an Italian delegation at Benghazi airport, including key figures such as Italian Ambassador to Tripoli Gianluca Alberini, Consul General in Benghazi Francesco Saverio De Luigi, and representatives from ENAC, Enav, Ita Airways, and other aviation firms.

The delegation inspected Benghazi's Benina Airport, with ENAC experts reviewing its infrastructure progress toward meeting international standards. ENAC President Pierluigi Di Palma confirmed that the first Rome-Benghazi flight will be launched in June 2025, marking a significant milestone in restoring direct air links between the two nations. Ita Airways and Medsky Airways have already resumed operations with Tripoli, and expanding flights to Benghazi is expected to boost economic and trade relations.

Haftar underscored the importance of Italian companies in Libya’s reconstruction efforts, particularly in infrastructure, housing, and healthcare projects. As Libya embarks on a major redevelopment phase, the resumption of Italian business activities will be vital for economic growth and strengthening private-sector partnerships, reinforcing Italy’s role as a key economic partner in Libya's recovery and development.
