Ontario Trade Minister Heads to India for Tech Business Attraction

Ontario's Trade Minister is embarking on a significant mission to India, aiming to allure Indian tech enterprises to the Canadian province. Victor Fedeli, Minister of Economic Development, Job Creation, and Trade, will lead this week-long endeavor, marking the first visit by a prominent Canadian leader to India since tensions escalated in September following the killing of pro-Khalistan figure Hardeep Singh Nijjar in British Columbia.

In an interview prior to his departure, Fedeli emphasized the tech-centric nature of the trip, highlighting the opportunities for Indian companies to expand into North America by establishing a presence in Ontario without compromising their operations or market share in India. Describing the mission as a "roll-up-your-sleeves sales mission," Fedeli expressed optimism about the positive interactions with Indian firms, despite the bilateral tensions between governments.

The visit serves as a signal that Ontario remains open for business, underlining the enduring value proposition for Indian businesses considering expansion. Fedeli's earlier plans for a trade mission were disrupted by the bilateral freeze but are now being realized, demonstrating Ontario's commitment to fostering international partnerships.

The value proposition includes access to 51 countries with tariff-free agreements, Ontario's robust ecosystem in tech and life sciences, and its advanced manufacturing capabilities. Fedeli's proactive approach, including distributing visiting cards printed in Hindi, reflects the eagerness to engage with Indian businesses and capitalize on mutual opportunities in the tech sector.

Overall, the mission underscores Ontario's steadfast commitment to collaboration with Indian counterparts and reinforces the message that despite challenges, the fundamentals for business cooperation remain strong.
