Primark has announced plans to open five new stores in Italy, situated in Turin, Livorno, Cosenza, Salerno, and Genoa. These will be the first Primark outlets in Italy to feature self-service checkouts.
Operating in Italy for eight years, Primark currently employs 4,500 individuals across its 15 existing stores and regional office in Milan. The expansion initiative is expected to generate 600 new jobs across the nation.
Luca Ciuffreda, Primark Italy's director, attributed the brand's popularity in Italy to its offering of trendy fashion and essential items at reasonable prices. He emphasized that affordability allows everyone to engage with fashion trends.
Highlighting their commitment to sustainability, Primark revealed that 55% of this year's clothing sold in their stores comprised recycled or more sustainably sourced materials, a significant increase from 45% in 2022. Additionally, the company has sold 3 million units of circular clothing.
Primark has pledged to transition 100% of its clothing to the Primark Cares label by 2030 while maintaining affordable prices, a move appreciated by industry observers.
Ciuffreda emphasized that the new stores aim not only to expand their business and offer sustainable fashion but also to create employment opportunities in local communities.
While historically focusing on in-store sales, Primark introduced its Click + Collect service in 2022, initially for UK customers in 57 stores. Recently, this service expanded to include womenswear, the brand's most popular category, in September 2023.
Associated British Foods (ABF), Primark's parent company, acknowledged ongoing challenges for consumers but noted a reduction in inflationary pressures over the past year. ABF also operates in large grocery, ingredients, and agriculture sectors.
