US technology giant NVIDIA and Indian conglomerate Reliance Industries, led by billionaire Mukesh Ambani, have officially announced a groundbreaking partnership aimed at revolutionizing the landscape of artificial intelligence (AI) supercomputers in India.
In a joint statement released on Friday, both companies unveiled their shared vision to construct an AI infrastructure that far surpasses the capabilities of India's current fastest supercomputer. This collaboration promises to propel India into the forefront of AI technology.
Prior to the announcement, NVIDIA's founder and CEO, Jensen Huang, held a crucial meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi earlier in the week. This meeting served as a precursor to the formal announcement and underscored the strategic importance of this venture.
NVIDIA, a company that has been operating in India since 2004, boasts four engineering development centers located in Gurugram, Hyderabad, Pune, and Bengaluru, employing a workforce of over 3,800 individuals. This well-established presence in India positions them well for this ambitious project.
The core objective of this partnership is to create an indigenous large language model that can effectively handle India's diverse languages. This model will be tailored to cater to various generative AI applications and will be pivotal in serving India's vast and diverse population.
NVIDIA will contribute its cutting-edge GH200 Grace Hopper Superchip and the DGX Cloud, an AI supercomputing service based in the cloud. The GH200 represents a significant leap forward in computing architecture, delivering unmatched performance and exceptional memory bandwidth.
The resulting AI infrastructure will serve as the cornerstone of Reliance Jio Infocomm, Reliance Industries' telecommunications arm. This collaboration marks a pivotal moment in the global AI revolution, which is profoundly reshaping industries and daily life worldwide.
Reliance intends to harness AI to create applications and services tailored to the needs of their 450 million Jio customers. Furthermore, they will establish an energy-efficient AI infrastructure, extending support to scientists, developers, and startups across the nation.
The applications of AI are vast and impactful. From enabling rural farmers to access weather information and crop prices in their local languages via mobile phones to offering expert medical diagnoses and interpreting imaging scans at scale when immediate access to doctors is limited, AI is poised to enhance countless facets of Indian society.
One notable feature of this initiative is the plan to host the AI infrastructure in AI-ready computing data centers, with future expansion goals of up to 2,000 MW. Execution and implementation will be overseen by Jio, leveraging their extensive expertise in mobile telephony, 5G spectrum, fiber networks, and more.
Jensen Huang expressed his excitement about the partnership, stating that NVIDIA is thrilled to collaborate with Reliance in constructing state-of-the-art AI supercomputers in India. He emphasized India's immense scale, abundant data, and talent pool as key assets for the endeavor. With the most advanced AI computing infrastructure at their disposal, Reliance aims to develop large language models that will drive generative AI applications designed specifically for the Indian populace.
Reliance Jio Infocomm, well-equipped with broad expertise, infrastructure, and engineering capabilities, will assume responsibility for the rollout and management of the new AI computing infrastructure. This partnership with NVIDIA aligns perfectly with Jio's strategy to establish itself as a comprehensive digital, cloud, and networking platform serving both consumers and businesses.
Mukesh Ambani, Chairman and Managing Director of Reliance Industries, emphasized the significance of this initiative in India's technological journey. He likened the impact of this collaboration to the transformative role that Jio played in India's digital evolution. Ambani envisions computing and technology supercenters, similar to the one proposed with NVIDIA, as catalysts for India's accelerated growth.
Akash Ambani, Chairman of Reliance Jio Infocomm, reinforced the commitment to democratizing access to cutting-edge technologies and contributing to India's technology renaissance. The partnership with NVIDIA represents a substantial stride in this direction. Together, they aim to develop a state-of-the-art AI cloud infrastructure that prioritizes security, sustainability, and relevance across India. This initiative is set to expedite India's journey towards becoming a global AI powerhouse.
