Sharp Corporation, backed by Foxconn, is exploring partnerships in India to establish a display fabrication facility under the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM) scheme. This move aligns with India’s ambition to become a global semiconductor manufacturing hub. The Japanese company is in discussions with several Indian firms, with top executives from its display vertical meeting potential partners, aiming to finalize a deal by the end of the year.
Sharp's strategy involves collaborating with a strong Indian player who will lead the project while Sharp provides technical expertise, a model they've successfully implemented in countries like China, Korea, and Taiwan. Sharp's potential investment of up to $5 billion in this venture underscores its commitment to expanding India's semiconductor ecosystem.
Sharp Corporation, primarily engaged in manufacturing telecommunications, electronic equipment, and components, became a subsidiary of Foxconn in 2016. Sharp India operates across 13 cities, offering market-leading B2B and B2C products. This partnership endeavor coincides with India’s plan to launch the second phase of the ISM, aimed at expanding its semiconductor ecosystem by including component companies, raw material suppliers, and other related sectors, beyond just chip fabrication and packaging units.
