TVS Motor Co, a prominent player in the electric two-wheeler sector since January 2020 with its iQube e-scooter debut, is poised to unveil its second electric scooter in Dubai today at 9.30 pm IST. The choice of Dubai as the launch venue hints at the potential for the new TVS EV to be a premium offering with global export prospects.
The series of teasers the company has disseminated on its social media channels since August 10 suggest that TVS' innovative and distinctive new EV will deviate significantly from the existing iQube model.
As the Indian two-wheeler market experiences an upward surge in demand for premium products, both internal combustion engine (ICE) and EV variants, the anticipation is that the new TVS e-scooter will stand apart from the current offerings in India. This differentiation not only sets the product apart from competitors but also caters to an international audience.
The teasers from TVS Motor Co imply that their latest creation is engineered to redefine boundaries, establish new benchmarks, and challenge the conventional norms of electric mobility. The phrase "Thrill has a date" is a subtle indication that the upcoming eco-friendly machine is likely to prioritize performance. The visual teaser featuring the speed boldly displayed on the dashboard suggests a potential top speed of 105 km/h for the new TVS EV.
TVS Motor Co, the second-leading EV original equipment manufacturer (OEM) in India after Ola Electric, aims to elevate its position within the segment. In the initial seven months of CY2023, the Chennai-based manufacturer sold a total of 87,397 iQube units, averaging around 12,485 units monthly.
The collaboration between TVS and BMW Motorrad is also gaining momentum. Announced in December 2021, this long-term partnership expansion involves joint development of new platforms and future technologies, encompassing electric vehicles (EVs). Notably, the recently revealed BMW CE 02 electric two-wheeler is the second collaborative platform, following the 310 bikes. Of significance is TVS Motor Co's role in designing, developing, and constructing the CE 02 platform.
TVS Motor Co's strategic plans include introducing an electric motorcycle in the near future. The brand's extension is likely to be integrated into the high-performance TVS Apache platform. Additionally, TVS holds an equity stake in Ultraviolette Automotive Pvt Ltd, situated in Bengaluru, which manufactures the high-performing F77 electric motorcycle.
Aiming to bolster its exports significantly, TVS already holds the position of India's second-largest two-wheeler exporter, trailing only Bajaj Auto. Despite challenging export market conditions in FY2023, the company dispatched 915,018 two-wheelers abroad. The first four months of FY2024 witnessed TVS exporting 270,084 units.
Considering the global shift towards electric mobility, exemplified by countries like ASEAN transitioning to electric vehicles, TVS is keen to explore EV exports as a lucrative business avenue. This drive for expansion led to TVS forming a partnership with Singapore-based tech company Ion Mobility in February 2023. This collaboration aims to provide Ion Mobility with the necessary support to succeed in the electric two-wheeler markets of Singapore and Indonesia.
In parallel, TVS is gearing up to venture into the three-wheeler electric vehicle domain. This segment is witnessing robust growth in India, but a separate analysis is warranted for this aspect of the company's electric vehicle journey.
