UAE-Malaysian Joint Venture Secures $316 Million Baghdad Metro Project

A Malaysian engineering firm, HSS Engineers Berhad (HEB), and its UAE affiliate have won a $316 million contract to oversee the construction of the new Baghdad metro. The 148-kilometre network with 64 stations is expected to significantly improve Iraq's infrastructure, with the project slated for completion by 2029. However, tendering delays may affect the timeline.

This joint venture marks a significant step in Iraq's efforts to modernize its infrastructure and reconnect its economy globally. Concurrently, Iraq has signed deals with China State Construction Engineering Corporation and Turkey’s Kiklop Design Hertz Insaat for Nasiriyah International Airport's development, resumed direct flights between Baghdad and Beijing, and engaged with IATA to lift Europe’s ban on Iraqi Airways. Additionally, Iraq is renewing its efforts to join the World Trade Organization.
