The UAE has launched the EcoMark Global Framework aimed at bolstering green trade opportunities for Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs). This initiative proposes the establishment of trusted accreditation bodies in each country, tasked with assessing and certifying companies based on their green credentials. Simultaneously, a toolkit will be provided to assist companies in meeting the necessary criteria. According to Abdelsalam Mohamed Al Ali, the Plenipotentiary Minister, UAE Representative to the World Trade Organization, this move makes global green accreditation more accessible and affordable for MSMEs.
Both the COP Presidency and ICC will actively advocate for the EcoMark framework among global SMEs, aiming to increase its adoption and enhance MSMEs' involvement in green trade. Their support will encompass advice on standards development and strategies for engaging SMEs. Furthermore, they will explore integrating EcoMark with existing and forthcoming initiatives geared towards greener and more inclusive trade for MSMEs.
The EcoMark Global Framework addresses a critical gap in the evolving landscape of global trade. While there's increasing consumer demand for eco-friendly products, MSMEs face challenges in showcasing their green credentials due to high costs and complex processes. This initiative aims to support governments in establishing accreditation bodies while providing direct capacity building and training for MSMEs to demonstrate their sustainable production practices.
Abdelsalam Mohamed Al Ali emphasized the UAE's recognition of the need for an inclusive and accessible green trade framework tailored for MSMEs. This initiative represents a significant stride towards a more sustainable and inclusive global economy, empowering MSMEs to access new markets, attract customers, and gain recognition for their commitment to sustainability.
