The UK government has introduced a new AI safety platform to assist businesses in evaluating and managing risks associated with artificial intelligence. This initiative, announced on Wednesday, aims to position the UK as a global frontrunner in AI safety and testing, providing businesses with comprehensive guidance and resources for conducting impact assessments. It will help companies examine machine learning algorithms, ensuring unbiased data use and ethical AI practices. Science and Tech Secretary Peter Kyle emphasized that this platform offers businesses the clarity and support needed to use AI responsibly, while also promoting the UK as a center of AI safety expertise.
Kyle has been vocal about the potential of AI to drive the UK’s economic growth, projecting a productivity boost of 5% and fiscal gains of £28 billion if AI is fully integrated into the economy. This platform builds on the work of the AI Safety Institute, created by former Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, and is part of a broader government agenda to make AI safety a key competitive strength. Assurance technologies—tools that verify and assess AI systems, similar to cybersecurity—are already developed by UK-based companies like Holistic AI, Enzai, and Advai. The government estimates this sector could expand six-fold, reaching a valuation of £6.5 billion by 2035.
The UK’s platform faces global competition, with initiatives like the US AI Safety Institute and the EU’s strict AI Act. To strengthen AI safety, the UK has partnered with Singapore, promoting research and standard-setting collaboration. Dominic Hallas, from The Startup Coalition, sees major potential in AI assurance but highlights challenges, such as limited access to computing resources and skilled talent. A recent report by the Social Market Foundation recommended increased public-private sector investment in AI assurance, suggesting up to £60 million in funding to support the UK’s leadership in this vital technology.
