The British government has initiated support for those affected by Tata Steel UK's decarbonisation process, beginning with the release of an initial GBP 13.5 million from the Tata Steel/Port Talbot Transition Board fund. This funding is aimed at helping affected workers retrain or acquire new skills for the employment market. It will also support local businesses heavily reliant on Tata Steel, allowing them to explore new markets and customers. The Transition Board recently discussed the allocation and monitoring of this funding to ensure taxpayer value.
UK Business and Trade Secretary Jonathan Reynolds emphasized the importance of this funding in supporting workers and businesses during Tata Steel's transition. The government is collaborating with trade unions and industry to ensure a green steel transition that benefits the economy, workforce, and local communities.
Meanwhile, Welsh Secretary Jo Stevens announced that over 50 businesses have pledged to support workers potentially impacted by the decarbonisation efforts at Port Talbot steelworks. The Mumbai-headquartered Tata Steel is also holding informal consultations regarding its new Electric Arc Furnace, expected to begin operations in 2027, which will significantly reduce CO2 emissions and address environmental concerns in the community.
