The UK-Ukraine Digital Trade Agreement (DTA), which went into effect on Sunday, 1 September, promises to boost trade between the two nations by facilitating quicker and more cost-effective digital transactions. This groundbreaking agreement, one of the first of its kind, is set to revolutionize trading systems as Ukraine's physical trading infrastructure has been severely affected by ongoing conflict.
As a major global IT services exporter, Ukraine has rapidly developed sectors such as cybersecurity, artificial intelligence (AI), and mobile applications. The UK, with its strong position in technology, is ideally suited to support Ukraine’s transition to a digital economy. Currently, over half of the UK's services exports to Ukraine are digitally delivered.
Business and Trade Secretary Jonathan Reynolds emphasized the importance of this digital-only trade agreement, noting its role in supporting Ukraine’s economy and its ongoing fight for independence. First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy of Ukraine, Yuliia Svyrydenko, highlighted the agreement as a significant gesture of solidarity, aimed at integrating Ukraine into global supply chains and boosting its small and medium-sized businesses.
Minister for Trade Policy Douglas Alexander mentioned the agreement’s potential to ease digital trade for Scottish and Ukrainian businesses amidst the ongoing conflict. Sabina Ciofu of TechUK lauded the deal for strengthening tech ties and simplifying trade, while Pavlo Pikulin of Deus Robotics praised the UK-Ukraine TechBridge programme for its role in facilitating tech startups.
The DTA is part of the UK’s broader digital strategy to bolster Ukraine's digital sector and enhance collaboration on emerging technologies, including cybersecurity.
