The UK and Australia have initiated a groundbreaking collaboration to jointly develop next-generation sub-systems for low-cost weapons. This partnership unites the UK’s Modular Weapons Testbed with Australia’s SHARKTOOTH program, which focuses on plug-and-launch modular technology to create adaptable and versatile weapon systems.
SHARKTOOTH is an advanced small missile under development that supports rapid integration of key components, including sensors, guidance systems, propulsion units, and warheads. The program's flexible design enables faster innovation and deployment, meeting the evolving demands of modern warfare. A spokesperson from the UK’s Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl) described the collaboration as a major advancement in the way complex weapons systems are developed and delivered.
By combining Australia's modular engineering expertise with the UK’s extensive missile technology, the joint project aims to create more capable and responsive weapon systems for both nations’ armed forces. This collaborative effort is expected to accelerate the development and reduce risks associated with building advanced guided weapon subsystems.
The focus areas include seekers, modular warheads, additively manufactured engines, fuses, and advanced algorithms to enhance guidance, navigation, and control. These elements are critical in ensuring precision, efficiency, and adaptability in next-gen weapons. The joint venture will also explore emerging technologies and innovative methodologies to elevate future weapons capabilities.
The partnership between the UK’s Dstl and Australia’s Defence Science and Technology Group is designed to deliver not only rapid deployment of advanced capabilities but also improved interoperability between the two countries’ defense systems. Emphasizing modular and flexible design, the collaboration supports quicker responses to evolving threats on the battlefield.
Moreover, this initiative aims to expand the pool of innovative defense ideas by involving defense contractors, small-to-medium-sized enterprises, and academic institutions across both nations. It strengthens the broader defense ecosystem and sets the stage for long-term strategic cooperation in future weapons development.
