Unifor union approves two-year contract with General Motors

Unifor members at the CAMI Assembly and Battery Assembly plants in Ontario have ratified a significant two-year contract with General Motors (GM). The deal was overwhelmingly supported, with 95.7% of Unifor Local 88 members voting in favor. The new contract features immediate pay increases of 10%, followed by a 2% raise in September 2025 and an additional 3% increase in July 2026. Skilled trades will see a substantial wage increase of 20.25%, reflecting the union’s commitment to ensuring competitive compensation for its members.

This contract, which expires on September 20, 2026, represents a strategic alignment for Unifor, marking the first time the union has successfully negotiated a two-year contract that synchronizes with ongoing negotiations involving the Detroit Three automakers. This alignment aims to enhance the bargaining power of over 5,600 GM members. Unifor National President Lana Payne emphasized the significance of this agreement, highlighting its role in unifying members and bolstering their collective strength in future negotiations.

Unifor Local 88 represents more than 1,300 workers at the CAMI and Battery Assembly plants, which produce the Chevrolet BrightDrop EV 600 and EV 400, along with Ultium battery modules, underscoring the growing importance of electric vehicle production in the region.
