Walmart Canada celebrates 30 years since acquiring 122 Woolco stores, marking its entry into the Canadian market. Since then, the retailer has grown to operate 400 stores and distribution centers, employing around 100,000 people. In 2023, Walmart Canada reported a gross revenue of $6 billion, a 1.8% increase from the previous year, with food and consumable sales outpacing general merchandise. Notably, 10% of its sales were digital.
The company’s expansion in Canada involved converting smaller discount stores into supercenters, offering a broader range of groceries. By 2006, Walmart introduced its first Canadian supercenters, followed by a significant expansion in 2008. Walmart’s strategy focused on providing competitive prices, leading to a reduction in the average basket price of consumable goods by 8% within two years.
Walmart Canada has become a leader in one-stop shopping, offering both food and non-food essentials. The company continues to invest in its e-commerce and omnichannel services, enhancing customer experience through innovations like store pickup and digital enhancements. Additionally, Walmart Canada has expanded its healthcare services, including pharmacies, medical clinics, and eye-glass centers, further integrating them with digital tools to offer accessible care for customers.
