CARBIOS and FCC Environment UK have announced a Letter of Intent (LOI) to explore the establishment of a PET biorecycling facility in the UK using CARBIOS’ innovative technology. CARBIOS, a leader in biological technologies for plastics and textiles, is partnering with FCC Environment, a top UK recycling and waste management company. This joint initiative aims to advance the circular economy by using CARBIOS’ PET biorecycling technology to convert PET plastic and textiles into high-quality recycled PET (r-PET).
The new UK-based plant will utilize CARBIOS’ enzymatic depolymerization technology, which efficiently recycles PET waste, including challenging fractions like polyester textiles and multilayered plastics. This technology stands out for its lower energy consumption and improved recycling outcomes compared to conventional methods. CARBIOS, which has an industrial-scale plant under construction in France, plans to become a leading PET recycling technology provider by 2035.
FCC Environment supports the UK government’s goal of a more circular economy and views this project as a way to enhance recycling processes and contribute to environmental sustainability. CARBIOS’ technology is expected to play a crucial role in processing hard-to-recycle PET waste and addressing the plastic waste crisis.
