In a significant development, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has officially initiated visa-free travel for short-term visits to the United States for eligible Israeli citizens and nationals. This historic announcement comes in the wake of Israel's recent inclusion in the U.S. Visa Waiver Program. Commencing on Thursday, October 19, eligible Israeli citizens and nationals can begin the application process for travel authorization to the United States through the Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) and U.S. Customs and Border Protection's (CBP).
This monumental decision was made on September 26, 2023, following consultations between the DHS and the Department of State. Israel's inclusion in the U.S. Visa Waiver Program enables eligible travelers to apply online for authorization to visit the United States via ESTA. Successful applicants will have the privilege of traveling to the United States for tourism or business purposes for a duration of up to 90 days without the need for a U.S. visa. It is important to note that Israeli citizens and nationals possessing valid B-1/B-2 visas can continue using them for business and tourist trips to the United States.
Participation in the Visa Waiver Program necessitates that any citizen entering the United States without a visa hails from a nation that reciprocates the privileges extended by the United States to its own citizens and nationals. Israel has formally committed to the United States that U.S. citizens traveling with a U.S. passport may seek entry into Israel without any bias concerning national origin, religion, or ethnicity. To ensure compliance with all program requirements, the United States maintains continuous oversight of Visa Waiver Program countries, including Israel.
By possessing a biometrically enabled passport book it must be eligible for Israeli citizens and nationals. Travelers with non-biometric, temporary, or emergency travel documents or those from non-Visa Waiver Program-designated countries do not qualify for travel under the Visa Waiver Program; they should apply for a U.S. visa instead. It is essential to be aware that ESTA applications may take up to 72 hours for processing. While the ESTA application is currently available in English only, it will be offered in other languages no later than November 1, 2023.
ESTA stands as an automated system designed to determine the eligibility of travelers for entry into the United States under the Visa Waiver Program, while also assessing any potential law enforcement or security risks associated with their travel. After completing an ESTA application, travelers will receive notification regarding their eligibility to visit the United States under the Visa Waiver Program. The DHS utilizes the application data to thoroughly vet travelers before granting authorization for travel to the United States. As part of this vetting process, information pertaining to suspected or known law violators and individuals of concern is shared with the appropriate law enforcement, national security, and counterterrorism agencies.
For individuals planning to stay in the United States for longer than 90 days or those considering extending their stay or altering their status while in the United States, traveling on a visa may remain the most suitable option.
