France and the UAE have signed a major framework accord to establish a 1-gigawatt AI-focused data centre, with investments ranging between $30-$50 billion. This strategic partnership aims to enhance collaboration between the two nations and position them as global leaders in AI, competing with the U.S. and China.
The agreement marks a groundbreaking commitment from both countries to advance AI technology and infrastructure. Announced on Thursday, the deal strengthens France and the UAE’s roles in shaping the future of AI through large-scale investment and innovation.
French President Emmanuel Macron and UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed al-Nahyan discussed the partnership in Paris ahead of a global AI summit. The event, which will bring together representatives from 100 countries, is set to reinforce Europe’s standing in the AI sector and challenge the dominance of other leading nations.
The Franco-Emirati collaboration will focus on various key areas, including the acquisition of cutting-edge AI technology, talent development, and the creation of sovereign AI infrastructures. This initiative is expected to drive innovation and enhance AI capabilities in both nations.
Initial investments and further details are likely to be announced at the Choose France summit later this year. As part of its broader AI strategy, France has also identified 35 potential sites for data centres to support the growing demand for AI development.
