Around 25 individuals out of the 303 passengers on a chartered flight that was grounded last Thursday have sought asylum in France.
Two people aboard were directed by French authorities due to human trafficking concerns, while the 25 others refused to return to India and have requested asylum in France. Among those left stranded in Paris are a 21-month-old child, several unaccompanied minors, and adults from India and Nepal.
The passengers seeking asylum reportedly include around four individuals from Nepal, while the rest are from Punjab and Gujarat in India.
Authorities are conducting interrogations to understand the reasons behind their asylum claims. All passengers are undergoing questioning by immigration authorities and other agencies after the Airbus A340 landed back in Mumbai on Tuesday with 276 passengers on board.
The flight, operated by Romanian charter company Legend Airlines, was bound for Nicaragua but made a technical stopover in Vatry, France. French police intervened suspecting human trafficking. After extensive questioning, French prosecutors allowed the plane to depart on Sunday.
French authorities initiated a judicial investigation to examine the purpose of the trip, involving a specialized unit focused on organized crime, suspecting potential human trafficking.
Legend Airlines stated that the two initially detained individuals were released after a court appearance and were termed "assisted witnesses" under French law. These passengers were part of the client's confirmation process.
Nicaragua has gained attention as a potential route for migrants attempting to reach the US. The flight's intentions are speculated to involve illegal entry into the US via Nicaragua in Central America.
This incident signifies a shift in migration dynamics, with flights to countries like Nicaragua becoming known as 'donkey' flights, aiding migrants in their journeys to preferred destinations, including the US.
The fiscal year 2023 saw a significant increase in attempted illegal entry into the US, with 96,917 Indians, marking a 51.61% surge from the previous year. Among these attempts, 41,770 Indians aimed to cross the Mexican land border.
To summarize, an Airbus A340 carrying Indian passengers, after facing scrutiny in France, led to 25 asylum requests. Two individuals faced legal proceedings but were later released. The incident spotlights migration dynamics and routes used by migrants seeking entry into the US.
