JBS USA is partnering with GreenGasUSA to launch renewable natural gas (RNG) projects at several beef and poultry processing plants across the U.S. This initiative is part of JBS's commitment to sustainability and reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by utilizing circular economy technology that converts waste into renewable energy.
Wesley Batista Filho, CEO of JBS Foods USA, emphasized the company's dedication to minimizing the environmental impact of food production. He noted that this collaboration with GreenGasUSA transforms previously unused byproducts of food production into RNG, significantly offsetting fossil fuel usage. The process serves as a model for the industry, demonstrating how innovative approaches can contribute to sustainability.
The RNG will be produced by installing GreenGasUSA’s on-site gas upgrading systems at JBS facilities in Grand Island, Nebraska, Hyrum, Utah, and Sumter, South Carolina. The Sumter project is expected to be completed by early 2025, while the other two projects are slated for completion by the end of 2025. This partnership not only aims to reduce GHG emissions but also enhances wastewater management and improves local air and water quality.
Since 2019, JBS has initiated over 25 projects aimed at capturing or eliminating methane emissions, achieving a reduction of more than 600,000 tonnes of GHG annually.
