Ryanair was compelled to announce the cancellation of 55 flights passing over French airspace today, as a result of ongoing strikes led by French air traffic controllers. In a video message that resonated throughout the airline industry, Group CEO Michael O'Leary disclosed that, during the initial wave of departures this morning, more than 200 out of the 500 flights scheduled across Europe experienced delays due to the actions of the striking controllers. This marked a disheartening milestone, with today being the 64th day this year that French air traffic controllers had engaged in industrial action, creating significant challenges for airlines and passengers alike.
With the frustration and disruption mounting, Mr. O'Leary did not mince words when he described the dire impact of these strikes on their daily operations. He stressed that the recurring disruptions were avoidable, calling on European Commission President Ursula Von Der Leyen and other commissioners to take immediate and effective measures to mitigate the recurring problem of overflights being disrupted by French ATC strikes. Furthermore, Mr. O'Leary revealed that Ryanair had gone the extra mile, collecting and submitting two petitions containing 1 million and 1.5 million passenger signatures, respectively, in a concerted effort to emphasize the urgency of the matter. Despite these actions, there had been a conspicuous lack of response or action on the part of the Commission.
Mr. O'Leary closed his message by extending a sincere apology to the passengers who were bearing the brunt of these disruptions. He acknowledged their frustrations and inconvenience, reiterating the importance of resolving this ongoing issue. The situation highlights the need for collective action by the European Union to address the repeated disruptions in the aviation industry and safeguard the interests of both airlines and passengers alike.
