One hundred and twenty years since the Entente Cordiale, Britain and France are embarking on a new era of alliance, reminiscent of the historic 1904 agreement that fostered a deeper relationship between the two nations. This time, their focus is on leveraging their partnership to bolster European support for Ukraine and exert influence on the United States.
In a recent communication to The Telegraph, British Foreign Secretary Lord Cameron and his French counterpart, Stéphane Séjourné, emphasized their enduring friendship and the positive impact of their collaboration in shaping a better world.
Yet, the current context is fraught with challenges. Conflict persists in Ukraine, and the US's financial support, amounting to US$60 billion (£47 billion), faced hurdles in Congress until very recently. Europe's response remains fragile, with internal divisions jeopardizing both EU cohesion and transatlantic cooperation.
Can the Anglo-French alliance inspire broader commitments from other nations? Cameron and Séjourné believe so, envisioning seizing opportunities through their partnership. Moreover, as pivotal members of NATO, they advocate for heightened engagement from European and US allies and improvements in European security structures.
Both Britain and France have been stalwart supporters of Ukraine since the 2022 invasion, providing military assistance, including training, financing, and lethal weapons. Their efforts have also pressured the EU, particularly Germany, into significant military aid commitments.
However, challenges persist, including delays in US aid approval and intra-EU disagreements over anti-Russian sanctions. British and French leadership could play a crucial role in coordinating defense efforts and diplomatic initiatives, ensuring continued support for Ukraine and strengthening transatlantic relations. This leadership also offers diplomatic opportunities for Britain, showcasing its post-Brexit roles and responsibilities.
