US Startup Poolside Secures $126M Seed Funding, Moves to France

26 Aug, 2023

Paris welcomes a significant entrant to the AI landscape, Poolside AI, an ambitious startup aiming to develop an innovative software code generation tool, akin to ChatGPT. With reliable sources confirming, Poolside has successfully secured an astounding $126 million in seed funding, displaying the strong investor confidence in its vision and potential.

As part of its strategic expansion, the US-based startup has chosen to establish a subsidiary in France and relocate its headquarters to Paris, a move that bolsters the nation's aspirations in the AI domain. Spearheaded by prominent figures such as French billionaire Xavier Niel and US VC Felicis, the funding round garnered substantial interest from notable contributors including Rodolphe Saadé, Motier Ventures, Bpifrance, NewWave, and Frst, demonstrating a broad spectrum of support.

This financial achievement follows an earlier seed funding round in May, led by Redpoint Ventures, which raised $26 million, effectively making this recent development an extension of that successful endeavor. Poolside AI was founded in May of the previous year by Jason Warner, the former CTO of GitHub, and Eiso Kant, a seasoned entrepreneur renowned for establishing ventures like Athenian, which focuses on software development analytics.

Paris has emerged as a magnet for AI innovation, attracting entrepreneurs like Warner and Kant who are channeling their efforts into AI startups. The appeal lies in the city's flourishing talent pool, characterized by availability and affordability, making it an ideal breeding ground for companies like Mistral, Nabla, and Dust, renowned AI entities.

Pooling their collective expertise, Poolside's compact team, currently numbering under 10 members, is diligently crafting a foundational AI model that differentiates itself from ChatGPT by its unique objective — empowering users to instruct the tool, using natural language, to compose code for application creation. This democratization of software development could revolutionize the field, allowing non-coders, such as educators or medical professionals, to craft purposeful applications.

Although the full realization of this visionary tool will demand several years of dedicated development, Poolside is presently focusing on an interim goal: constructing a model capable of aiding software developers in their daily tasks, including code optimization and bug resolution. This strategic trajectory underscores the company's commitment to driving practical impact in the short term while pursuing its grander mission for the future.
