Greater Lyon has awarded Veolia a significant contract to modernize and manage the Saint Fons wastewater treatment plant, one of France's largest. This six-year contract, valued at 100 million euros, aims to enhance biological treatment compliance, asset condition, and heavy rainfall management, working closely with local authorities to set high standards for operational efficiency, energy, and environmental performance.
Veolia's integrated offer will reduce the plant's electricity consumption by 15% and water consumption by 10% through more efficient digitized management. The plant's carbon footprint will be significantly lowered, with 90% of energy consumption covered by decarbonizing energy from Veolia’s recovery facilities. Waste heat recovery from incinerators will provide 6% of the plant’s electricity needs, replacing fossil fuels.
Veolia will address emerging pollutants like PFAS in sewage sludge and prepare the region for future regulatory changes. Additionally, Veolia will support Greater Lyon’s soil return strategy by pooling sludge treatment with methanization at a neighboring plant. Jean-François Nogrette, Senior Executive Vice President, France & Special Waste Europe, expressed pride in making Saint Fons a true environmental leader, highlighting Veolia's ability to offer solutions that combine ecological and economic performance, aligning with the GreenUp strategic plan for a sustainable future.
