On May 6, 2024, President Xi Jinping joined French President Emmanuel Macron in Paris for the closing ceremony of the sixth China-France Business Council meeting. In his address, titled "Building on Past Achievements to Jointly Usher in a New Era in China-France Cooperation," Xi emphasized the significance of the 60th anniversary of diplomatic ties between the two nations, highlighting their enduring friendship and commitment to principles of independence and mutual benefit.
Xi underscored the cultural and economic complementarity between China and France, stressing their shared interests and the absence of fundamental conflicts. He outlined a vision for deeper economic collaboration, including expanded trade relations and increased cooperation in areas such as agriculture and technology. Additionally, Xi pledged to extend visa exemptions for short-term visitors from France and other countries until 2025.
Looking ahead, Xi emphasized China's readiness to work with France to strengthen cooperation not only bilaterally but also within the broader context of Europe and on global challenges. He called for enhanced coordination in multilateral forums and emphasized China's commitment to high-standard opening up and reform, inviting French companies to participate in China's development.
Lastly, Xi invoked the spirit of the upcoming Paris 2024 Olympic Games as a symbol of unity and cooperation, urging both countries to work together to open a new chapter in their relationship and contribute to a shared future for humanity.
