Marubeni Corporation and Japan Petroleum Exploration Co., Ltd. (JAPEX) have teamed up with PT Pertamina and its subsidiary PT Pertamina Hulu Energi to conduct a feasibility assessment for a BECCS project in South Sumatra, Indonesia. This joint study will explore the implementation of BECCS technology at a pulp mill and nearby oil field area. The project aims to capture CO2 emitted from biomass-fueled boilers at the PT.
Tanjungenim Lestari Pulp and Paper mill, a Marubeni subsidiary, and inject it into synclinal aquifers in the Limau oil field operated by Pertamina. The study seeks to determine if the technology can be effectively implemented by 2030.BECCS, or Bioenergy with Carbon Capture and Storage, is a vital negative emission technology essential for achieving carbon neutrality, particularly for industries where complete decarbonization is challenging. The initiative represents a significant step towards pioneering commercial-scale BECCS projects.
Marubeni's green strategy, outlined in its Mid-Term Management Strategy “GC2024,” aims to address climate change and foster sustainable development in Indonesia. JAPEX also aims to advance carbon-neutral projects globally, contributing to its vision of becoming a comprehensive energy company.
