Representatives from Japan and Colorado recently convened at the Japan-Colorado Business Seminar, organized by the Leeds School of Business in collaboration with the Denver Consulate-General of Japan. The seminar focused on the burgeoning economic relationship between the two regions, highlighting their mutual prosperity.
During the event, Vijay Khatri, the Tandean Rustandy Endowed Dean of Leeds School of Business, underscored Japan's significance as Colorado's seventh-largest exporter, contributing to 4.3% of its total exports, and its role as the 21st largest importer of Colorado goods. This underscores Japan's substantial investment in the U.S., solidifying its position as a key trading partner.
Akira Kajita, Chief Executive Director of the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO), emphasized the presence of over 80 Japanese companies in Colorado, supported by JETRO's efforts to facilitate their expansion in the U.S. market. He highlighted the organization's focus on strengthening ties between Japanese and Colorado businesses, fostering reciprocal trade relationships.
The seminar, curated by Brian Lewandowski, Executive Director of the Business Research Division, facilitated insightful discussions featuring prominent business leaders such as Elise Hamann, Jonathan Coors, Keita Yasuda, Gregory P. Hanes, and Takahiro “Taka” Fukuo. They highlighted the benefits of collaboration across various sectors, from agriculture to high-tech industries.
A standout example of collaboration emerged through Terumo BCT, a Japanese company headquartered in Lakewood, CO for over five decades. Their groundbreaking product, the Reveos Machine, addresses the U.S.'s platelet shortage, showcasing the power of cross-cultural innovation in driving economic growth and addressing critical societal needs.
