A collaborative effort by the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, and 15 other nations has resulted in the release of global guidelines aimed at safeguarding artificial intelligence (AI) models from tampering. The initiative encourages companies to adopt a "secure by design" approach for their AI models, prioritizing cybersecurity in their development.
On November 26, 2023, these 18 countries unveiled a 20-page document outlining recommendations for how AI firms should address cybersecurity concerns during the development and deployment of AI models. Recognizing that security is often a secondary consideration in the fast-paced AI industry, the guidelines emphasize the need for a paradigm shift.
Alejandro Mayorkas, the U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security, highlighted the significance of cybersecurity in the current stage of AI development, emphasizing that cybersecurity is crucial for building AI systems that are safe, secure, and trustworthy. The release of these guidelines marks an inflection point in the evolution of artificial intelligence, a technology deemed to be one of the most consequential of our time.
This collaborative effort follows other government initiatives related to AI, including a recent AI Safety Summit held in London in November. The summit provided a platform for governments and AI firms to converge and reach agreements on the development of AI, further underlining the global commitment to prioritizing safety and security in the advancement of artificial intelligence.
