The Japan-China Economic Association, a longstanding participant in annual delegations since 1975, temporarily halted these visits post-2019 due to the global impact of the coronavirus pandemic.
The upcoming delegation comprises influential figures such as Tokura Masakazu, Chairman of the Japan Business Federation (Keidanren), and Kobayashi Ken, Chairman of the Japan Chamber of Commerce and Industry, both serving as top advisers. Spearheaded by Shindo Kosei, the head of the Japan-China Economic Association, the delegation is scheduled for a four-day visit to Beijing starting this Tuesday.
The primary agenda involves discussions with senior Chinese officials, addressing various economic issues. Against the backdrop of China's temporary suspension of Japanese fishery product imports, the talks gain added significance. This suspension is a reaction to Japan's release of treated water from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant into the sea.
The business landscape is further complicated by Chinese anti-espionage laws implemented in July, prompting caution among Japanese companies contemplating investments in China. Additionally, the absence of short-term visa exemptions for Japanese citizens, initially suspended due to the pandemic, remains a notable factor influencing business decisions in the region. The upcoming discussions aim to navigate these complex issues and foster collaboration between Japanese and Chinese business leaders.
