A recent government survey reveals a downturn in business sentiment among major Japanese companies during the first quarter of this year, marking the first negative reading in four consecutive quarters. This shift is primarily attributed to shipment suspensions in the automotive sector due to safety test violations. The survey, based on responses from approximately 11,000 companies, indicates a pessimistic outlook with the business conditions index standing at minus 0.018 for the January-March period.
The manufacturing sector faced significant challenges, with its index plummeting to minus 6.7, reflecting the automotive industry's struggles. In contrast, non-manufacturers experienced a more positive sentiment, boasting an index of 3.2. This improvement is attributed to the recovery in the services sector, driven by a resurgence in tourist numbers.
In a related development, the Bank of Japan reported a 0.6 percent rise in the Producer Price Index for February compared to the same month last year. This index gauges the prices companies charge each other for goods and services. While wholesale inflation in Japan saw a decline last year due to government subsidies lowering electricity and gas bills, prices are now on the rise as the impact of these subsidies diminishes.
