Neste, ITOCHU, and GS Caltex have made a significant advancement in sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) availability in Japan. They announced the first batch of CORSIA-eligible ISCC-certified SAF for purchase at Narita International Airport. This marks a pivotal moment, as it is the first instance of CORSIA-certified SAF being made available for airlines to buy at a commercial scale ahead of the mandatory phase starting in 2027.
Neste supplied over 1,000 tons of neat CORSIA-eligible SAF, which was blended with conventional jet fuel at GS Caltex’s refinery in Yeosu, South Korea. This collaboration not only establishes a local blending process but also facilitates transportation to Japan for use at Narita. The initial batch is intended for All Nippon Airlines (ANA) and Japan Airlines (JAL).
The introduction of SAF is crucial for reducing greenhouse gas emissions in aviation. With the support of local governments, this initiative aims to strengthen supply chains for SAF in the Asia-Pacific region. As the industry progresses towards decarbonization, partnerships like this are essential for ensuring a stable supply of sustainable fuels, ultimately contributing to the aviation sector's net-zero carbon emissions goal.
