Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr. stated that China has no business interfering in the bilateral agreement between the Philippines and Japan, emphasizing it as an internal matter. He likened China's interference to unwelcome comments on internal affairs, highlighting that any agreements between nations should not undermine mutual trust or regional stability.
Teodoro’s statement came in response to Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian's remarks against the Reciprocal Access Agreement (RAA) between the Philippines and Japan. The RAA, signed to enhance defense cooperation amid South China Sea tensions, allows the Armed Forces of the Philippines and Japan Self-Defense Forces to train together and participate in joint exercises. Despite China’s opposition, Japanese officials asserted that the RAA aims to sustain peace and stability in the region without targeting any country.
The agreement still requires ratification by the Philippine Senate and Japan’s National Legislature. China’s criticism includes historical grievances from World War II, urging Japan to act prudently in military matters. However, Japan reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining international order based on the rule of law and working with the Philippines and allies to uphold peace and stability in the region since the end of World War II.
