Afya's R$660m acquisition Unidompedro Medical School takeover news

With the acquisition in Bahia, Afya expands its offerings significantly. Afya, a leading medical education company, recently closed a deal worth R$660 million to acquire Unidom. This acquisition includes Unidompedro, which operates a higher education center with 300 slots in medical school, and Dom Luiz College, both located in Bahia. This marks Afya's 21st acquisition since its IPO in 2019, under the ownership of German group Bertelsmann.

Afya's portfolio now includes nearly 23,000 students enrolled in medical courses across 3,500 slots, with Unidompedro boasting an average monthly tuition of R$11,300. The majority of Unidom's revenue comes from its medical program, expected to reach R$267 million by 2027.

The acquisition, backed by market funds, involves a payment of R$347.8 million upon approval, with the remaining R$312.2 million to be paid in installments over 10 years. This extended payment period stems from legal considerations related to slot authorizations. If approved for the More Doctors program, Afya will pay an additional fee per slot.

Afya's strategic expansion not only marks its debut in Salvador but also aligns with its commitment to add 200 slots annually, fulfilling promises made at its IPO. The company's model emphasizes lifelong learning in health, providing opportunities for continued education beyond graduation. With an impressive financial outlook for 2024 and a growing presence across Brazil, Afya solidifies its position as a key player in medical education.
