Bain Capital to Sell China Data Centres Worth $4 Billion

09 May, 2025

Bain Capital is reportedly planning to sell its China-based data center business, valued at more than $4 billion, according to sources familiar with the matter. This strategic move comes as global investors reassess their exposure to the Chinese market amid increasing geopolitical tensions and regulatory scrutiny. The asset is currently held through ChinData, a major data center provider in Asia, which Bain Capital took private in a deal finalized in 2023.

The sale process, still in the early stages, may attract interest from private equity firms and infrastructure investors, particularly those with existing data center portfolios in Asia. Market analysts believe this could be one of the largest data center transactions in China, highlighting ongoing demand for digital infrastructure despite broader market volatility. The deal could also serve as a signal of foreign investors seeking exits from Chinese technology assets while still capturing value from high-growth sectors.

Bain Capital has not issued an official statement on the matter, and details of the potential transaction remain confidential. However, people close to the deal said investment banks have been approached to manage the sale. This development is being closely watched by industry stakeholders as data demand continues to surge due to cloud computing, AI applications, and enterprise digitization trends across Asia.

ChinData, headquartered in Beijing, operates hyperscale data centers across mainland China and Southeast Asia. Its facilities are critical to cloud service providers and internet companies, making it a strategic asset in the regional tech ecosystem. Analysts note that while the regulatory climate in China remains challenging, core infrastructure assets like data centers still hold appeal due to long-term digital transformation tailwinds.

This potential sale by Bain Capital underscores a broader trend of portfolio rebalancing and targeted exits by Western investors in China’s evolving technology landscape.
