China Warns of Consequences if US Sets Trade Deal Terms

28 Apr, 2025

China’s response to President Trump’s statement on setting unilateral trade terms underscores its insistence on a balanced approach to negotiations. The Chinese government has consistently stated that trade talks should be conducted on the basis of equality, mutual respect, and fairness. While President Trump suggested that the U.S. holds significant leverage and could impose its own terms if no deal is reached, China rejects this idea. The country has made it clear that forced terms would undermine the trust needed for a deal and create further tensions between the two nations.

On the matter of tariffs, China maintains its position that the tariffs imposed on Chinese goods should be completely lifted as part of any agreement. The Chinese leadership argues that the current tariffs have caused economic damage, both domestically and globally, and must be removed for the trade relationship to move forward. In contrast, President Trump has indicated that while tariffs could be reduced, they may not be entirely removed, signaling a divide in the two countries’ expectations.

Despite these tensions, China has expressed its willingness to continue negotiations, signaling a preference for diplomatic dialogue rather than escalating the trade war further. The Chinese government insists that negotiations must lead to a fair and comprehensive deal, and it will not agree to terms dictated solely by the U.S. President Trump’s remarks, while asserting American strength in the negotiations, also highlight the complex and often contentious nature of U.S.-China relations in the context of global trade.
